This course introduces the knowledge and practical decision-making needed to respond to a containable workplace fire within safe operating limits. The training content references the learning outcomes associated with SAQA Unit Standard 12484.
Learners will cover how to:
• Recognise common fire classes, fuel sources and factors that influence how fires spread.
• Identify workplace fire hazards and appropriate preventative measures.
• Select and inspect suitable fire-fighting equipment.
• Apply safe response techniques when a fire is containable and conditions permit.
• Recognise dangerous fire behaviour and withdraw safely when necessary.
• Raise the alarm and hand control to emergency responders.
• Report the incident, actions taken and equipment used accurately.
By the end of the training, learners should be able to recognise common fire classes and workplace fire hazards, select suitable fire-fighting equipment, respond to a containable fire within safe limits, withdraw when conditions become unsafe, hand control to emergency responders and report the incident accurately.
Learners should have communication and numeracy skills appropriate to NQF Level 2 and be able to participate safely in supervised practical activities. Bring valid identification and any supporting documents specified in the booking confirmation.
Training is delivered in English. Language-support requirements for company groups should be discussed before booking.
The course combines facilitator-led theory, demonstrations, workplace scenarios and supervised practical activities. Public training is available in Cape Town, with on-site delivery available for suitable company groups and venues.
This workplace Basic Fire Fighting course does not qualify a learner to work as a professional firefighter.
The applicable assessment requirements, evidence, moderation process and certification pathway will be confirmed before enrolment. Attendance or course completion alone does not automatically guarantee competence, credits or certification.

SAQA Unit Standard 12484 is recorded at NQF Level 2. This level applies to the referenced unit standard and does not, by itself, confirm accredited enrolment.
SAQA Unit Standard 12484 carries four credits. Credits can only be awarded through the applicable approved assessment, moderation and certification pathway.
