Perform Basic Fire Fighting – SAQA Unit Standard 12484

Fires can ignite and spread in seconds – knowing how to respond saves lives and limits damage.

This hands-on, SAQA-accredited course (Unit Standard 12484, NQF Level 2, 4 Credits, CETA) equips learners with the essential skills to identify fire risks, select the correct equipment, and safely contain or extinguish workplace fires.

Learners will gain practical competence in fire response. By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify different classes of fires (organic materials, flammable liquids, gases, metals, electrical) and how they spread.

  • Select and inspect appropriate fire-fighting equipment (extinguishers, hoses, blankets).

  • Apply safe techniques to fight, contain, or extinguish fires.

  • Monitor fire behaviour, recognise dangers (e.g., backdrafts), and retreat safely when needed.

  • Report and record fire incidents accurately for follow-up.

Delivered in English by experienced facilitators, the course combines theory with intensive practical training through live fire demonstrations, extinguisher drills, real-world scenarios, videos, and supervised fire-fighting exercises. Learners must provide certified identification and be physically able to handle equipment.

This training empowers workers to act decisively in fire emergencies – ensuring compliance, minimising loss, and building a confident, fire-ready team.

  • At the end of the course qualifying learners will be able to:

    • Discuss and explain procedures for dealing with fires in the workplace.

    • Identify the type of fire, its context and select the appropriate firefighting procedure.

    • Identify, select and check appropriate firefighting and safety equipment.

    • Fight containable/extinguishable fires.

  • Two certified copies of ID/Passport certified copy of Highest Qualification . Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 equivalent. Course designed as a progression.

  • The course is facilitated by a competent subject matter trainer, who utilizes a combination of the following techniques to ensure that the session is practical and experiential: Discussion; Role Play; Exercises & Case Studies; Videos/DVDs; Games, Slide Shows & Written Questions.
