Common Questions

Frequently Asked
Questions

Everything you need to know about our welding certification programs

  • We offer various durations depending on your goal. Our Short Skills Courses range from 5 to 10 days for basic proficiency, while more advanced Coded Welding Certifications can take 3 to 6 weeks. We also offer part-time options for those currently employed.

  • No. Our Beginner Welding Course is designed specifically for individuals with zero prior experience. We start with the basics of safety and machine setup before moving on to practical bead-running and joint fabrication.

  • Upon successful completion and testing, you will receive a Swift Skills Academy Certificate of Competency. Our courses are aligned with merSETA and QCTO standards, ensuring your qualification is recognized by employers across South Africa.

  • Pricing depends on the specific welding method (MIG, TIG, or Arc) and the duration of the course. Our foundational courses start at approximately R 1560. Contact our Cape Town office or use our online Quote Engine for a detailed breakdown of current 2026 rates.

  • Our main training facility is centrally located in Cape Town Killarney Gardens, Cape Town. We are easily accessible via public transport and offer secure on-site facilities for all our students.

  • For beginners, Stick (Arc) welding is the most common starting point as it teaches the fundamentals of heat and puddle control. MIG is the fastest to learn for workshop jobs, while TIG is the "gold standard" for precision and high-pay specialized work.

  • Our training is roughly 30% theory and 70% practical. We believe welding is a "muscle memory" skill. You will spend the majority of your time "under the hood" in a dedicated welding booth, practicing on real metal coupons.

  • While we cannot guarantee employment, Swift Skills Academy has a strong reputation with Western Cape industrial firms. We provide job-readiness support, including advice on trade testing, CV preparation, and connecting top-performing students with our network of local fabrication partners.

  • We provide all the specialized safety equipment required for the duration of the course, including welding helmets and gloves. However, for hygiene and safety reasons, students are provided with their own SABS-approved safety boots and flame-retardant overalls.

  • We have flexible weekly intakes. Unlike traditional colleges, you don't have to wait for a new semester. Once your registration is processed and the deposit is paid, you can usually start your training within 7 to 14 days.

  • You must be at least 16 years old. While a Grade 12 with Math and Science is preferred for advanced engineering roles, we accept Grade 9 learners into our foundational skills programs, provided they pass our basic literacy and numeracy assessment.

  • Yes. Our courses align with the specific QCTO and merSETA standards required for high-pressure environments. For projects like SASOL or Eskom, we ensure your training covers the specific ISO 3834 quality requirements that major South African industrial contractors demand.

  • While our welding modules focus on fusion and integrity, we offer an integrated path to SAQA 15034. This is essential for Cape Town welders working in ship hulls or storage tanks where hazardous gas monitoring and rescue protocols are legal requirements.

  • A skills certificate (like our short courses) provides immediate, job-ready proficiency in specific coded welding (MIG/TIG/Arc). A Red Seal is the final national qualification. We provide the foundational hours and accredited "logbook" training required to qualify for your Trade Test at a national testing center.

  • Yes, provided you pair our welding proficiency with SAMSA-approved STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) training. Our courses provide the practical hot-work skills required for emergency sea repairs and maritime engineering.

  • ISO 3834 is the "gold standard" for welding quality. Companies that are ISO 3834 certified only hire welders who can prove they follow strict Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS). Our training mimics these high-compliance environments, making you "audit-ready" for top-tier employers.

  • Absolutely. Cape Town is a global hub for catamaran and yacht building. We offer specialized TIG and MIG modules specifically for aluminum, focusing on heat control and anti-corrosion techniques vital for the marine sector.

  • Yes. For students aiming at the oil and gas or pressure vessel industry, we train according to ASME IX and EN ISO 9606-1 codes. This ensures your "coupons" (weld samples) can pass the destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) required for high-stakes piping.

  • The operating factor is the percentage of a shift a welder is actually "under the hood." We teach our students how to optimize their workflow and setup to increase their arc time, a key metric that top-tier fabrication managers use to measure performance.

  • A welder who can’t read a drawing is just a laborer. Our advanced courses include interpreting welding symbols, understanding tolerances, and reading complex blueprints, which are essential for structural metal fabricators in the Western Cape construction boom.

  • We teach "Visual Inspection" first. Our students learn to identify undercut, porosity, and lack of fusion before the X-ray or Ultrasonic test happens. Learning to pass an NDT audit on your first try is what separates a R10,000/month welder from a R30,000/month specialist.

  • We use the latest Inverter-based technology. In 2026, the industry has moved away from heavy transformers. Our students learn on energy-efficient, digitally-controlled machines that offer the precise parameter control required for modern alloy welding.

  • Yes. If you have been welding for years but don't have the "paper," we offer an RPL assessment. We evaluate your current skill level, bridge the theoretical gaps, and help you obtain an official, accredited qualification to boost your salary potential.

  • While entry-level semi-skilled welders start around R8,000–R12,000, a certified Coded Welder (ASME IX or marine-spec) in Cape Town can earn between R25,000 and R45,000 per month depending on the complexity of the project (e.g., oil & gas or renewable energy).

  • Massive. The Green Hydrogen projects in the Northern and Western Cape require specialized stainless steel and high-pressure piping. Our TIG welding modules are specifically geared toward the precision required for these zero-emission energy builds.

  • Our certifications are based on international ISO and AWS (American Welding Society) standards. While you may need to pass a "site test" in countries like Australia or the UK, the core technical training you receive here is designed to meet global structural and pressure-welding codes.

  • Safety is non-negotiable. You will need a flame-retardant (100% cotton) boiler suit, SABS-approved safety boots, a high-quality auto-darkening helmet, and leather welding gloves. We provide a full list of compliant gear upon registration.

  • Yes. Most shops only teach flat welding. We train you in "all-position" welding, specifically the 6G pipe position. Being 6G certified is the "Ultimate Badge" in welding—it proves you can weld in any direction, which is mandatory for pipeline and refinery work.

  • Swift Skills Academy is equipped with backup power solutions to ensure that "arc time" is never lost. Our 2026 facility is designed to keep the machines running so your 3-week course doesn't turn into a 6-week delay.

  • Yes. For Cape Town industrial firms, we can deploy instructors to your site to certify your team on your specific equipment. This minimizes downtime and ensures your staff are trained in the exact environment where they work daily
