Working in confined spaces on construction sites can expose workers and the public to hazards involving gases, water, fire, soil conditions, materials, machinery and equipment. This course provides structured training referencing SAQA Unit Standard 15034.

Participants will learn to:

• Recognise hazards associated with confined-space work.

• Identify appropriate protective clothing and equipment.

• Understand the preparation and training workers need before confined-space work begins.

• Plan emergency procedures and identify the resources needed to respond.

• Explain relevant occupational health and safety requirements for confined-space work.

Delivery may include facilitator-led explanations, discussions, demonstrations, workplace scenarios, exercises and knowledge checks. The activities included will depend on the selected delivery format and training venue.

This training supports safer work planning and hazard awareness. It does not replace site-specific risk assessments, permits, supervision, medical requirements, protective equipment or workplace emergency arrangements.

  • By the end of the training, participants should be able to:

    • Recognise hazards associated with working in confined spaces.

    • Identify protective clothing and equipment appropriate to the identified hazards.

    • Identify the preparation and training workers need before confined-space work begins.

    • Plan emergency procedures and identify the necessary response resources.

    • Explain relevant occupational health and safety requirements for confined-space work.

  • SAQA records assumed prior learning of ABET Level 4 Literacy and ABET Level 3 Numeracy for Unit Standard 15034. The booking team will confirm identification, documentation and any venue- or site-specific participation requirements before attendance.

  • Training is delivered in English. On-site groups should discuss language-support requirements with Swift Skills Academy before confirming the booking.

  • Facilitator-led delivery may include explanations, group discussions, demonstrations, workplace scenarios, exercises and knowledge checks. Public and on-site group options are available. Any site-specific practical activities will be confirmed during booking.

  • Training may include theoretical, practical and assessment activities appropriate to the booked programme. Before enrolment, confirm whether the selected pathway is credit-bearing, who will conduct the assessment and moderation, and which training or assessment evidence will be issued.

  • The training content references SAQA Unit Standard 15034: Work in confined spaces on construction sites.

    SAQA records the standard at NQF Level 2 with 2 credits. The standard has passed its registration end date, with last enrolment recorded as 30 June 2029 and last achievement as 30 June 2032.

    The applicable provider, enrolment, assessment and certification pathway must be confirmed before booking credit-bearing training.

  • The standard course duration is one day. The final schedule may vary according to group size, delivery format, venue and any agreed site-specific activities. The confirmed duration will appear on your quotation or booking confirmation.

  • SAQA Unit Standard 15034 is recorded at NQF Level 2. This describes the registered unit standard and does not, by itself, confirm credit-bearing enrolment for every course booking.

  • The applicable quality-assurance, assessment and moderation pathway must be confirmed for each booking. Request written confirmation before enrolment if your organisation requires a credit-bearing programme or formal learner achievement.

  • SAQA Unit Standard 15034 carries 2 credits. Credits can only be awarded through the applicable registered enrolment, assessment and moderation process. Course attendance alone does not guarantee credits.
