Important: gloves can become an entanglement hazard around drills, lathes, rotating shafts and other moving machinery. Do not make gloves compulsory for every task without assessing whether they could be caught.
3. Safety Footwear and Protective Clothing
Workshop floors may contain oil, water, metal offcuts and heavy components. The risk assessment may require footwear with toe protection, grip, sole penetration resistance or heat resistance. 5. Welding, Cutting and Grinding PPE
Hot work may require a process-appropriate welding helmet, safety spectacles beneath it, flame-resistant clothing, welding gauntlets, safety footwear and hearing protection. Fume control should prioritise local extraction or ventilation. Respiratory protection should be selected only after the contaminant and exposure have been assessed. Screens or barriers should protect nearby workers and customers from radiation and sparks.
6. Fuels, Solvents, Paints and Other Chemicals
The workshop must identify hazardous products, keep current Safety Data Sheets available and train workers on labels, handling, storage, spill response, first aid and PPE. Suitable controls may include substitution, closed containers, extraction, spill kits and restricted ignition sources. Respirators must not be selected by appearance or described only as a dust mask. Selection must match the contaminant and exposure and address fit, use, cleaning, storage, inspection and replacement.
7. Battery Servicing and Charging
Battery work may create corrosive splash, electrical, manual-handling and ignition hazards.
